In you are lodg'd a Cornucopia, an Encyclopedia, an unmeasurable Profundity of Knowledge.

— Peter A. Motteux

The eighteenth century has been called the century of the encyclopaedia with publication of numerous great works of reference, from Chambers' Cyclopaedia (London, 1728) to successors such as Diderot's Encyclopédie (Paris, 1751–1780) and the Encyclopædia Britannica (Edinburgh, 1768–1771).
