 Il s’agit de Stephen Fox (1704–1776), député à la chambre des Communes à partir de 1726, qui plus tard, en 1741, devint Lord Ilchester. Entre 1726 et 1736 il était l’amant de John, Lord Hervey (1696–1743). Les deux hommes firent un long voyage ensemble: ils quittèrent l’Angleterre en juillet 1728, et en octobre 1729, en revenant d’Italie, ils passèrent par Paris où ils furent en contact avec Voltaire. C’est à cette occasion que Hervey montra à Voltaire un poème qu’il venait de composer sur son voyage en Italie, poème qui figura par la suite dans les Lettres philosophiques: voir N. Cronk, ‘Voltaire, Lord Hervey et le paradoxe du modèle anglais’, La Revue Française. Stephen Fox était un souscripteur de l’édition in-quarto de 1728 de La Henriade; son exemplaire, qui porte un ex-libris ‘The Earl of Ilchester’ (avec la devise de la famille, ‘faire sans dire’), se trouve maintenant dans la collection Martin Gross de la New York Public Library (cote: *KGV (Voltaire. Henriade.1728) 00–222). Voltaire connaissait également le frère de Stephen, Henry Fox (1705–1774), qui allait devenir le premier Baron Holland, et qui lui aussi souscrivit à La Henriade.

 This is Stephen Fox (1704-1776), member of the House of Commons from 1726, who later, in 1741, became Lord Ilchester. Between 1726 and 1736 he was the lover of John, Lord Hervey (1696-1743). The two men made a long journey together: they left England in July 1728, and in October 1729, returning from Italy, they passed through Paris, where they were in contact with Voltaire. It was on this occasion that Hervey showed Voltaire a poem he had composed on his trip to Italy, a poem which subsequently appears in Lettres philosophiques: see N. Cronk, ‘Voltaire, Lord Hervey et le paradoxe du modèle anglais’, La Revue Française. Stephen Fox was a subscriber to the 1728 quarto edition of La Henriade; his copy, which bears the ex-libris, "The Earl of Ilchester" (along with the family motto, "do not tell"), is now in the Martin Gross collection of the New York Public Library (shelfmark: *KGV (Voltaire. Henriade.1728) 00–222). Voltaire also knew Stephen's brother, Henry Fox (1705-1774), who became the first Baron Holland, and who also subscribed to La Henriade.

 Richings (s’écrit aussi Riskins, Riskings, Rickings, Richkings . . .) se trouve près d’Iver dans le Buckinghamshire, à 30 kilomètres à l’ouest de Londres. Bathurst vendit Richings à Lord Hertford en 1739. La maison, qui servit quelque temps de siège à la RAF, fut détruite pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale.

 Richings (also written Riskin, Risking, Rickings, Richkings . . .) is near Iver, Buckinghamshire, 30 miles west of London. Bathurst sold Richings to Lord Hertford in 1739. The house, which served for a time as the headquarters of the RAF, was destroyed during World War II.

 Lord Bathurst eut quatre fils et cinq filles. Il s’agit ici sans doute du fils aîné, Benjamin Bathurst (1711–1767), qui en 1729 avait dix-huit ans. Il avait souscrit à l’édition in-quarto de La Henriade. Le deuxième fils, Henry Bathurst (1714–1794), futur Earl Bathurst, n’avait que quinze ans en 1729.

 Lord Bathurst had four son and five daughters. This is probably the eldest son, Benjamin Bathurst (1711-1767), who in 1729 was eighteen years old. He had subscribed to the quarto edition of Voltaire's La Henriade. The second son, Henry Bathurst (1714–1794), later Earl Bathurst, was only fifteen in 1729.
