Anniversarial — 2011

1811

The French Empire is near its peak, though the war in the Iberian Peninsula has reached a stalemate. George III, dangerously ill, accepts the Regency Act, appointing his son, George, Prince of Wales, as Prince Regent. By the end of the year the king had succumbed to dementia, living out his days in Windsor Castle, where he died in 1820. 1811 saw the rise of the Luddite movement: textile artisans upset with changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution. Also that year, Jane Austin's first published novel, Sense and Sensibility, appeared under the pseudonym, "By A Lady".
